A battery provides current to energize or excite the alternator and assists in stabilising initial alternator output and an alternator uses mechanical power from the engine to supply electricity. An alternator links the engine-rotating shaft pulley with the alternator pulley to drive the alternator, and with the voltage regulator, ammeter, voltmeter, or warning light to inform the operator of charging system condition. How does a drive assembly work?

A drive Assembly provides for positive engagement of the starter motors with the ring gear and protects the armatures from prolonged engagement. Once the starter motor stars rotating, the inertia of the drive assembly causes it to wind the spring forcing the length of the spring to change. This makes the spring move with the ring gear. Once the engine starts, the back drive from the ring gear causes the drive pinion to exceed the rotating speed of the starter. At this point, the drive pinion is forced back and out of mesh with the ring gear.

A limitation of the drive assembly lies in its dependance on a particular quantity of "clash" between the teeth of the pinion and also the ring gears, before they slip into place and mate completely. The teeth of the pinion are already spinning when they get in contact with the static ring gear and will keep rotating until they both align perfectly. This brings about a lot of wear and tear on both sets of teeth. Owing to this wear and tear, over the past years, the drive assembly has been superseded by the pre-engagement system using a solenoid.

The first wound coil operates at a high current level, to produce the most pull or push. The second wound coil simply holds the plunger in place once it has completed its stroke and bottomed out. What is a dynamo motor and how does it work?

The D.C. Dynamo is basically an application of electromagnetic indication. It works on the principle that movement of a wire in a magnetic field induces current in the coil. in the case of a DC Dynamo, a rectangular coil is made to rotate rapidly in the magnetic field between the poles of the field coils. When this rectangular coil i.e. the armature rotates, it cuts the lines of magnetic force, due to which a current is produced in the field coil. The current can be used to run various electrical appliances.

A Simple dynamo motor consist of a rectangular coil which can be rotated rapidly between the North and South poles of a field coil. The armature coil is made up many turns of an insulated copper wire. The two ends this armature coil are connected to two copper half rings, also known as split rings of a commutator. It also consists of two carbon brushes which pass lightly against these two half rings. When the armature is rotated, these two half rings touch the two carbon brushes, one after another. And so the current produced in the armature is rotated, these two half rings touch the two carbon brushes, one after another. And so the current produced in the armature coil can be tapped out through the commutator half rings and into the carbon brushes.

Armature is a power-producing component of a motor and its key function is to convert electrical energy to mechanical energy. Armatures used in starter motors are made up of coils which carry current and rotate in a magnetic field. The armature wiring in copper enhances electrical efficiency due to its higher electrical conductivity. 
An armature has a continuous series of windings from each bar on the commutator, which loops around the iron stack teeth and connects to the next bar on the commutator. The winding continues to loop all the way around the armature in the same manner. Loops are either single or parallel conductors and might circle any number of times around the stack teeth turns in a coil. This phenomenon is commonly called 'Turning in a Coil'. The wire may vary in gauge, as is required by the design of the motor. Armature, commutator and brushes
 The armatures are mounted on the drive shaft and bearings for support. It is a laminated silicon steel core, that is wrapped with various conductors loops or windings. The commutator is a section of the shaft at the rear of the housing on that the brushes run to conduct electricity. Current flowing through the windings and therefore the commutator bars produce a magnetic field, which rotates the armature.
Solenoid, plunger and lever fork
 The solenoid contains of two coils of wire that are wrapped around a moveable core. The solenoid acts as a switch to close the electrical association and connects the starter motor to the vehicle's battery. The process allows the solenoid to push forward the plunger connected to the lever fork which engages the pinion.
 Pinion
 The pinion could be a unique combination of a gear and springs. Once the starter is engaged the gear is extended into the gearbox housing and is engaged with the regulator. This spins the engine to start the combustion process.

 The housing (yolk assembly) holds the starter fields among the housing with screws. This may consist of two to four field coils connected in series.
